Ka-3 build

This is the start of a 1/4 scale Ka-3 from the plans of Fred at glider ireland.
Now I am not a quick builder or even a good builder but I do muddle through, This will be my first scale glider, this is not the first model that I have built from plans.
Anyway step one started to cut out some fuselage formers out of 3mm ply. I will post every few days with progress.

Ok some more parts cut for the fuselage and the v-tail over the last few days, so today I had to start putting it together.

And one more photo

Progress for this weekend. It all went  together very easy, I have also cut out the V-tail mount and I just have to wait for the postman to deliver me some tubing so that I can finish the tail mount.

The cockpit is done in 1/16 ply. The plan said 2mm balsa but I like the durability of the ply, and the small weight increase should not be a problem. I may put another layer of soft balsa to bring the cockpit up to the correct thickness.

Update. some more work done this week, I have just about finished the V-tail mount and the tail.
Confession time, this is the second mounting and tail the first one was built with brass tubes that I had ordered along with piano wire to fit in the brass tubes, I never checked the fit of the wire into the tubes as I had asked the model shop for a nice fit, when I did try them after I had glued in the brass tubes,  I found that the wire had a lot of play and I ended up throwing them in the bin. this is the third time this shop in the last six weeks have got it wrong, they have sent items missing, then charging me twice for post when they sent the other parts, not answering email's it goes on. so this time I found some carbon tube and rod from Mugi model shop I sent my order and he phoned me to check what I needed and what it was for, Good customer service.

The other thing that I got done was the brass frame for the canopy using my home made brass tube bender, you just push the brass through the rollers a few times and then tighten the vice a little, this pushes the front roller forward in its slot and then I push the brass tube back and forth some more and it bends with out kinking. And I also made the spring catch at the front of the canopy out of brass tube and a pen spring.
Over the next few days I will get some more of the fuselage done.

The way I will probably actuate the elevators is just the old fashioned bowden cable and metal quick links, the way I do this is I will roughen the outer plastic and glue it to just about the whole lenght of hard balsa or spruce with cyano and baking powder but first I will steam the wood so that I can get it to bend (if needed to exit the right place ) this way its easy to support inside the fuselage and there is no flex in the cable.
I am always looking for better ways of doing this and I do like the way that you do yours, and I will use it on my next glider but I could not figure out how to do this with the V-tail.

OK, you are putting me off bowden cable, its a good job you asked. I thought about fitting a servo each side just in front of the elevator but I would have fit them just in front of the tail as there is no room under the tail as the fuselage is too narrow for two servos, and I would rather try hide them. So I have come up with plan 3, I am going to fit Push Rod Fuselage Transfer Linkage one each side (see picture below ) just under the tail, that way I will be able to have two push rods running down the fuselage and the servo's can stay near the front under the wing.

This is the progress for the last two days, fuselage bracing done and multiplex tow release fitted, nose block roughly cut and lead weights hidden in the nose block, there is not a lot of room for the tow release because of the battery box so I have doubled up the bottom of the front former with 2mm ply. I also decided to fit a second layer over the front ply cockpit opening of balsa this will make it easier to cover. It's begining to look like a glider now
