Cyclone external combustion engineProblem: Conventional engines and new tech engines need fuel to run, often a very specific type, but some fuels are in short or easily interrupted supply and often very expensive or they need a totally new not yet installed, supply infrastructure.
Solution: External combustion engines can run on an extremely wide range of fuels, whatever is available, they are true multi fuel engines.
External combustion engines apply heat to a captive fluid or gas, Stirling engines and steam engines are examples, the applied heat causes expansion which creates mechanical motion. But there are some new designs in the works and the Cyclone Green Revolution Engine is one that looks interesting, even DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) is looking into one as the power source for an autonomous self fueling robot concept. That sounds pretty interesting to me, so I thought I would take a look.
Internal combustion engines need to burn fuel very rapidly before it is exhausted from the combustion chamber, some unburned fuel is often expelled and unused. To maximize efficiency, fuels must be carefully refined and the combustion process itself tightly controlled.
External combustion engines burn the fuel until it is consumed because there’s no need to hurry the process, it’s being used to heat something else which does the work. In the Cyclone Green Revolution Engine, almost any petroleum or biomass fuel can be used, even mixed together in the same tank unless they would interact in some way. The engine itself doesn’t care what you put in it, gasoline, kerosene, diesel, biodiesel, ethanol, jet fuel, if it burns, fill ‘er up.
In the Cyclone engine, a centrifugal combustion chamber keeps the heavier unburned fuel on the outside until it is completely burned, up to as much as a minute or so, instead of only milliseconds in a normal combustion chamber, then the hot gas in the 2,000 to 2,300 degree Fahrenheit range, goes to a heat exchanger and heats water.
Looking through their diagrams and schematics I thought, sure, fine in theory but does it work? It turns out it does, in everything from lawn mowers and weed trimmers to cars, trucks, boats, standby generators and more. Plus it needs no catalytic converter … no radiator (air cooled) … no transmission (high starting torque) … no oil pump (and no oil … the engine is water-lubricated).
These could easily fit in a motorcycle since sizing already puts them in lawn mowers and weed trimmers. Just think, fill up your bike with the cheapest fuel available or the only fuel available, … File this under interesting.

The Cyclone uses external combustion. Wait. What?
Fuel is mixed with air, atomized and sprayed into a circular chamber where it burns on the outside of a coil filled with water. The water is heated and turned into steam, which then is directed to pistons that push and turn a crankshaft.
The steam is then condensed back into water and recirculated.
The interesting part of the Cyclone is it can run on any fuel, at any time, with no modifications. Using biodiesel but are running low and can only get gasoline? No problem, pump it into the tank and away you go.
The engine’s thermal efficiency, above 30 per cent, is competitive with gasoline engines, not so much with diesel engines. But that flexibility with fuel is a huge advantage. Cyclone claims to have used everything from palm oil to used fryer grease. Bet that smelled like french fries.
Cyclone hopes to use the engine to set a world record for steam-powered speed at the Bonneville Salt Flats. The speed to beat is 148.308 miles per hour. No target date is set for the challenge, but the company is working on a sleek, lightweight car body.
You need a crankshaft, right?
Increasingly appearing in hybrid vehicles is the range-extender idea. If you know the Chevrolet Volt or the current Honda Accord Hybrid, you probably know what I’m talking about.
In these cars, the gas engine isn’t connected to the drive wheels. The cars are, with the only exception being a limp-home mode in the event of a failure, driven entirely by electric motors. The gas engine works only to power a generator to drive the electric motors.
The interesting thing here is an extra step in the process: the gas engine has to push pistons that turn a crankshaft that turns the rotor in the generator, which creates the electricity.
But what if you could eliminate the crankshaft?
That would save mechanical loss and would simplify the engine design.
To get to this point requires a quick explanation of electrical generation: A magnet turning inside a coil of wire induces electricity in the coil of wire. It’s the same technology as is in hydroelectric turbines and is the reverse of the function of an electric motor, in which electricity in the coil induces motion in the magnet.
But the magnet doesn’t need to TURN inside the coil of wire: back and forth motion of the magnet through a coil will also generate electricity.
Toyota’s idea is to remove the connecting rod between piston and crankshaft and in its place install a magnet. Around the cylinder walls is the electric coil.
By eliminating the crankshaft, all sorts of mechanical loss is taken out of the equation: there’s loss in the link between piston head and connecting rod, there’s loss in the connection of rod to crankshaft and in the turning of the crankshaft. As well, there’s loss between the crankshaft and the shaft of the electrical generator.
But, you wonder, how does the piston get back to the top of the cycle? Doesn’t the crankshaft and connecting rod also serve to push the piston back up?
If you maintain a pocket of air under the magnet, the air will compress on the downstroke and rebound to push the piston back up. A mechanical spring could also do the same thing, but that would become a service item, since springs eventually break.
The free-piston engine generator is in the early stages of development, so much so that even Toyota Canada had trouble finding information on it. It has the potential to be a very efficient generator of electricity.
As well, if you needed to gang cylinders together to create more electricity, the fact they wouldn’t be connected by connecting rods and a crankshaft means much of the mechanical complexity of timing cylinder cycles is avoided.
